European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
