Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
