Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
