Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
