The reporter also wondered if the situation could result in the removal of hosting duties for the larger World Cup.

The organization's deputy Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s claims when he commented days later at a conference in London.

“This is FIFA’s tournament, our responsibility, FIFA makes these matters,” he said. “Respectfully to current world leaders, soccer is transcends political figures and football will outlast their administration and their leadership. It's the beauty of our game, that it is bigger than any individual and bigger than a nation.”

Similarly, Trump’s response to a question about Boston included a parallel statement regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“If I believed LA was not adequately ready, I'd move it to a different city as needed,” he remarked. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to obtain a alternative consent, but we will proceed.”
