Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
